RYDER'S CHALLENGE GRADE 8 COMMUNITY SERVICE

June 22, 2023

Dear Parent or Guardian:

I hope that everyone’s summer break is off to a wonderful start! This letter communication is to inform you of the 8th-grade community service program at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.

We as a school believe the power of contribution strengthens the community and helps construct one's sense of purpose. All students in 8th-grade must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of community service. Students may complete up to (10) hours of community service prior to the start of their 8th-grade year.

Please note that you may consult the 8th-grade community service link on the LCJSMS website for service ideas throughout the school year. When utilizing the website, students should also download the 2023-24 Ryder's Challenge Verification Sheet. When attending a service project, students must have their verification sheets signed by the event coordinator.

Students must meet this community service requirement to be eligible to attend both the 8th-Grade Community Service Breakfast and the Pool Party at the end of the school year. Please note that these two events are earned privileges to those students who have met or exceeded the service requirement. Additionally, we will be looking for several rising 8th graders to help with our 6th-grade orientation/building tours on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. Students who participate will earn credit towards this service requirement. If your child is interested in assisting with this event, please contact me via phone (908) 273-1190 ext. 4555 or email at jcolineri@summit.k12.nj.us

Thank you,

Jenna Colineri, Assistant Principal
